This series of illustrations accompany Meander Spiral Explode, a 2019 book on the craft of writing by Jane Alison. Published by Catapult, Meander Spiral Explode explores narrative forms beyond (and sometimes in opposition to) the conventional dramatic arc. Alison’s book is a “museum of specimens” that explores how patterns can organize narrative craft. Each illustration accompanies a chapter heading. These include the spiral, the branch, the wave, the meander, and even the vortex street.
